ALEXANDER RODCHENKO

Alexander Rodchenko was a Russian artist, photographer, graphic designer and sculptor who was one of the founders of Constructivism and Russian design. Originally working as a painter and graphic designer, Rodchenko was one of the most versatile Constructivist and Productivist artists to emerge after the Russian Revolution. Gradually, his work became based more heavily in photomontage and photography, with the latter being socially engaged, formally innovative and opposed to a painterly aesthetic.

Rodchenko used photo montage to create powerful images that would be used for propaganda for the USSR.

I particularly enjoy this Constructivist poster, which can be likened to architecture in that it is highly symmetrical and equal in structure. The bold, graphic typography and selective imagery work extremely well together.
