"Like Spinning Plates" is built over the reversed backing track of an electronic version of "I Will", which Radiohead later released in a much different from on Hail to the Thief (2003). Says Thom Yorke, "We'd turned the tape (of "I Will") around, and I was in another room, heard the vocal melody coming backwards, and thought, 'That's miles better than the right way round', then spent the rest of the night trying to learn the melody." He sung the backwards melody. It was recorded forwards, and then listened to backwards, with Yorke doing the phrasing so as to create backwards sounding words, but it's sung forwards.
The lyrics are as follows; "while you make pretty speeches / I'm being cut to shreds / you feed me to the lions / a delicate balance / and this just feels like spinning plates / I'm living in cloud cuckoo land / and this just feels like spinning plates / our bodies floating down the muddy river."
